RAT and PFC MODE Control Panel

Overview

The RAT and PFC MODE Control Panel provides the flight crew with manual control over the deployment and reset of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) system, as well as the mode selection for the Primary Flight Control System (PFCS). These controls are used during electrical or control system abnormalities to maintain critical aircraft functions.

Panel Components

RAT MANUAL Switch

  • This is a guarded, momentary switch used to manually deploy the Ram Air Turbine.
  • When not pressed, the RAT remains stowed and the ON light is off.
  • When pressed, the RAT deploys and the ON light illuminates after successful deployment.

    • The RAT is designed to supply emergency hydraulic and/or electrical power during a loss of primary systems.

Note

If the RAT is deployed in flight, it cannot be retracted until the aircraft is on the ground.

RAT RESET Switch

  • This is a momentary pushbutton used to reset the RAT generator after a protection trip.
  • When normal, the FAULT light is off.
  • If overload protection triggers, the RAT generator disconnects and the FAULT light turns on.

    • The flight crew can attempt to reset the generator by pressing this switch, which reconnects the RAT GEN to the electrical network.

PFC MODE Switch

  • This switch toggles between AUTO and DIRECT modes for the Primary Flight Control System (PFCS).

    • In AUTO mode:

      • The system automatically selects the highest available flight control law based on system integrity and redundancy.
    • In DIRECT mode:

      • The PFCS bypasses normal control laws and provides direct input-to-surface actuation, typically used during degraded control conditions.

Info

AUTO mode is the default and preferred operating mode. DIRECT mode should only be selected when commanded by operational procedures.
